Herbert Leopold Gabryś
Power industry in Poland 2023 … from results and challenges of the year 2022
Given is the energy balance sheet for 2022 in comparisons with the year 2021. Stated is, amongst the others, that the electric energy production from lignite was significantly higher while the one from hard coal and natural gas was lower. There continues the global tendency to increase electric energy generation from RES. For the first time in many years the electricity production in Poland in 2022 was higher than its consumption. Changes in the previous relations between electric energy production and its final consumption relate to events in the global fuel market in 2021 and, a little later, with incidents in the Eastern Europe. Lower production of electric energy from commercial heat sources was in great part replaced by the one from RES. The role of gas generation markedly decreased. The overall picture of changes in the energy balance sheet for 2022 has been completed with the difference in import and export of electric energy from the period prior to pandemic until the present time.
Keywords: electric power industry in Poland, energy balance sheet for 2022, increase in electric energy production from RES

Jerzy Buchacz, Tadeusz Glinka
Silesian School of Transformer Diagnostics
The article discusses the history of transformer development in the world and in Poland. The beginnings of the Silesian School of Diagnostics and its current state are presented. The most important figures related to this subject were reminded: the founders of transformer factories and their accessories, as well as professors of the Silesian University of Technology and their graduates. Particular attention was paid to the oldest insulation testing laboratory in Poland, which has been operating continuously in Gliwice for over 60 years and the contribution of ENERGOPOMIAR-ELEKTRYKA to the development of transformer diagnostics and support management of maintenance.
Keywords: transformers, exploitation, diagnostics, DGA

Eugeniusz Głowacki, Patrycja Żupa-Marczuk
Future functioning of conventional power generation in the light of the proposed amendments to the Industrial Emissions Directive
In April 2023 it will have been a year since the European Commission presented its proposal for a revised Directive 2010/75/EU of the Parliament and of the Council on industrial emissions (the Industrial Emissions Directive or IED). The article discusses how the proposed amendments to the Industrial Emissions Directive may affect the future functioning of conventional power generation. The article does not cover all the aspects and suggestions included in the EC proposal, yet focuses on key technical issues that have an impact on operation of installations.
Keywords: IED Directive, BAT Conclusions, PRTR, CSRD Directive, transformation plans, FGD, flue gas desulphurization, SCR, SNCR, flue gas denitrification, dust removal, integrated permit, industrial emissions, environmental efficiency

Rafał Czekalski, Mateusz Ksiądz
Seasonal thermal energy storage systems
The article presents the concept of seasonal thermal energy storage in district heating systems. A review of potential long-term heat storage technologies is included and some examples of installations are described. The focus is on the technology of pit thermal energy storage (PTES) systems integrated with solar collectors. Moreover, the original model of a district heating system equipped with seasonal thermal energy storage developed using TRNSYS software is presented.
Keywords: renewable energy sources, solar collectors, thermal energy storage system, seasonal thermal energy storage, mathematical modelling, heat pump

Rafał Czekalski, Bartłomiej Dziubek
Heat generation technologies and storage for efficient district heating systems
The district heating sector is presently facing the challenges associated with the transformation of energy generation sources. Legal regulations and dynamically changing prices of energy carriers encourage investment in new solutions. The article presents technologies decisive for efficiency of district heating systems, which is one of the conditions to obtain subsidies for development, and also provides economic analysis as the basis for investment decisions.
Keywords: district heating, renewable energy sources, economic analysis, efficient district heating system, district heating transformation, cogeneration, thermal energy storage system, heat pump, waste heat

Dariusz Dekarz
Nuclear technologies in investment plans of district heating companies
– a survey summary for the National Centre for Nuclear Research
The survey conducted in 2021 by Energopomiar among public and industrial CHP plants showed a great interest in the implementation of nuclear technologies in Poland. The deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Micro Modular Reactors (MMR) is perceived as the way to quit fossil fuel combustion (decarbonization) and strive for climate neutrality. However, the use of nuclear technologies seems a distant prospect at the moment, that’s why individual companies are looking for solutions currently available on the market.
Keywords: nuclear technology, nuclear industry, nuclear reactors, HTR, HTGR, SMR, decarbonization, REPowerEU, taxonomy, thermal energy, electrical energy, district heating, power industry, cogeneration, combined heat and power generation, ETS
